Sustainability culture

We know that leaving a small footprint on the environment means sustainability has to be part of our culture.

Here are some of the ways we bring sustainability into our culture so that we can minimise our impact in practice.

Waste minimisation is an organisational Key Result Area (KRA), which means it's the primary way we measure our own performance and expect others to measure us. This makes it a very firm commitment. We go about achieving it by Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling. We have a particular focus on identifying uses for demolition waste.

At the senior management level, SCIRT has an Environmental Committee who focus on particular sustainability challenges and drive solutions in the organisation.

The best chance to be sustainable is to integrate it into our planning. At the project design phase, for example, we can consider a greater range of products and materials with a view to reducing our environmental impact. Adopting new products should encourage us to innovate and explore with them in later projects.

We challenge our delivery teams to come up with waste minimisation approaches and techniques and to share those. We actively encourage our staff to share sustainability knowledge. SCIRT also hold sustainability briefings at their offices where everyone can participate and be aware of current initiatives.

We set ourselves sustainability targets to hold ourselves accountable. For example, we have an ambitious target to reuse 20% of the waste that our work produces. We also commit to the goal of not causing any significant environmental incidents for the duration of the programme.

Internally, our activities are driven by a sustainability policy. The policy sets out clearly how we must conduct our business with sustainability in mind.
